More From the Yard

I shouldn’t really have an excuse not to get out with my camera every day in the summer, since I can just step out the front door and find something blooming. Like these Salvia in our back yard. They turned out really blue in the image, although they look purple in real life. I wanted to get more of an impression of the additional flowers in the background, but I couldn’t seem to get just the right angle.

Of course the beauty of back yard photography is that you get lots of reshoot opportunities. At least until the flowers stop blooming. The peony pictured below had a tiny green bug on it that I was trying to get in focus. Total fail on that, but I still like the result.

Deep reds and purples are horrible colors to photograph with a digital camera, as they always end up oversaturated. If it wasn’t for Photoshop, I would never get an image like this.

Believe it or not, the image on the right is a lowly blade of grass gone to seed. It was in the shade, which gave it a distinct blue tint. I tried and tried, but couldn’t get any of it in sharp focus due to a continuous gentle breeze. It turned out to be a happy accident, because the overall soft image looks more like a delicate flower than a lowly blade of grass. That’s the magic of the Lensbaby.
